Our History

Pet Horse and Farm, the revamped animal feed store formerly known as Essendon Produce and located near the DFO on Bulla Road, North Essendon, is on the move.

After 20 years at the DFO we have closed the store and replaced it with an upgraded online version from June 1, 2014. We are also extending our home delivery service and bringing you all the convenience of Internet shopping.

The van de Pol family has owned and operated the Essendon-based stockfeed and pet supply business for nearly 50 years. Having started out as a small grain store next to the Royal Hotel in Essendon, the business later moved to the Essendon railway siding before taking up its most recent location at the DFO for the past 20 years.

The original proprietor, Henk van de Pol, was a mill operator from The Netherlands, who set up in the company in 1965. Nearly 20 years later Henk’s eldest son, Jon, took over the family business and in 1995 moved to the Essendon Airport site.

As the business grew its retail arm, Jon’s younger brother, Donald, joined the company in 2007 and together they upgraded the store to cater for the increasing number of suburban pet owners. At the same time they expanded their traditional stockfeed business to include a store in Nagambie, Victoria.

The most recent development for the van de Pol family is the move to online shopping. James van de Pol, who has a background in media and communication, and currently completing his MBA, will drive these changes as Pet Horse and Farm enters a new and exciting phase.

James, supported by Jon & Don, will be bringing a little of the country to the city through the online or phone-up home delivery service.

Take some time to browse our upgraded website and place your orders, knowing that your selections will be delivered with care and a personal touch.
